The Great Race was an annual transnational automobile race held from 1908 to 1909. It was the brainchild of American promoter William Randolph Hearst, who sought to create a race that would rival the Tour de France and other popular European automobile races. The race was open to all types of cars, and the route varied from year to year. The first race in 1908 covered a distance of 22,000 miles and went from New York City to Paris. The second and final race in 1909 covered a distance of 10,000 miles and went from New York City to Seattle. The race was won both years by the Italian driver Vincenzo Lancia in a Fiat.
